Candidates seeking to represent Brookhaven and part of Sandy Springs in the Georgia General Assembly must file papers by next Wednesday to run in a July 14 special election.

The winner of the race will replace former Rep. Mike Jacobs, a Republican who was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to become judge in DeKalb County State Court.

Qualifying for office costs $400, and candidates may file to run between Monday and Wednesday, according to the Georgia Secretary of State's office.

Three candidates have already announced their campaigns: J. Max Davis, the Republican mayor of Brookhaven; Catherine Bernard, a Republican attorney who fought a proposal to grant Brookhaven redevelopment powers; and Taylor Bennett, a Democratic attorney and former Georgia Tech quarterback.

If necessary, a runoff would be held Aug. 11.
