Duluth would get a new 22,000-square-foot downtown library under an agreement approved by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Tuesday.
The new facility will be twice the size of the existing Gwinnett library branch on Duluth Park Lane. Under the agreement, Duluth will provide about 1.9 acres of land and vehicle access from Buford Highway. The city also would be responsible for off-site storm water detention and streetscape improvements.
The county will acquire a little less than half an acre for the project and will build the new library. The agreement does not include a specific timetable for developing the library.
“Having a library is exactly the type of amenity we want to add to downtown Duluth,” Mayor Nancy Harris said in a statement announcing the agreement. “With the addition of residential housing, having a library makes historic downtown Duluth even more desirable for all ages.”
County Commissioner Jace Brooks called the agreement “a great example of local governments working together effectively.”
