DeKalb County voters extended a property tax break for homeowners Tuesday.

The tax break, which has been in effect since 2007, protects homeowners from having to pay more in county taxes when their properties gain value. The vote renewed it for five more years.

The tax break gives homeowners a discount on their property taxes to offset increases that occur when property assessments increase. The tax break doesn't apply to property taxes for schools and some city governments.

More than 57,100 parcels benefit from the exemption.
