DeKalb changes to weekly trash pickup

Most DeKalb County residents’ trash will soon be picked up only once a week in an initiative that prevents a fee increase.

The DeKalb County Commission approved the proposal on a 5-1 vote Tuesday.

Garbage had previously been collected twice a week. Without the change, residents would have likely faced a fee increase from the current $268 per year.

The service change affects all DeKalb residents whose trash isn’t picked up by their city governments. Recyclables and yard trimmings will also be collected weekly at the same time as solid waste.

The county will distribute green 65-gallon garbage containers to households across DeKalb.

A launch date for the service changes will be announced in the coming weeks.
