Clayton Sheriff Victor Hill paid tribute Friday to slain Riverdale police Maj. Greg Barney calling him a "charismatic personality" who "gave his life trying to remove drug dealers from our community."

Friends since 1992, Hill said Barney was “easy to like, fun to be around and a very good solid individual.”

Barney, the father of twin teenage sons was killed yesterday while helping Clayton County police serve a no-knock search warrant for drugs at an apartment complex in Riverdale. The suspect who shot Barney was shot by Clayton police and was taken to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition. The suspect’s name and updated condition have not been released.

Hill, who has worked to rid the community of drugs during his tenure as sheriff, said Barney “would want us to finish the job.”

“As we honor our fallen hero, we will not let his death be in vain,” Hill said in his daily online Nixle post that goes out to the community. “In Major Barney’s memory, we must become resolved more than ever to let all remaining drug deals know that their presence will not be tolerated in Clayton County.”

Barney was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the Riverdale Police Department for 15 years, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page website. He is survived by his wife and twin teenage sons.
