A proposal to create the city of Stonecrest in DeKalb County passed the Georgia House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The House voted 144-17 to approve Senate Bill 208, which would put a referendum on the ballot to form Stonecrest. The bill now returns to the state Senate for a final vote likely next week.

Stonecrest would cover about 50,000 people in southeastern DeKalb near Interstate 20 and Stonecrest Mall, bordering the city of Lithonia.

“It allows the people of the Stonecrest community to have a say,” said Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler, D-Lithonia, the bill’s sponsor. “Everyone has a right to decide on what’s best for them, their families and their welfare.”

The referendum on the city of Stonecrest would be held May 24, according to SB208.
