A proposed city in the southern part of DeKalb County has been given a name: Greenhaven.

The city would include nearly 300,000 residents who currently live in unincorporated DeKalb. The name of the area was announced Thursday by Concerned Citizens for Cityhood of South DeKalb.

The group wrote in its Facebook announcement that the color green is associated with sustainable life, and the community will be a haven where all life is valued and safe.

“The city of Greenhaven shall be a place where human creativity, accountability, productivity, economic development and responsibility lives,” the group wrote.

Greenhaven was chosen from more than a dozen possible names, including New Phoenix, Mountain View, Granite City, Sky City, New DeKalb, Candler City and New Haven.

Greenhaven joins several other potential cities that may be considered by the Georgia General Assembly during this year’s legislative session.

Lawmakers are also being asked to approve cities of LaVista Hills, Sharon Springs, South Fulton, Stonecrest and Tucker.
