Children in Georgia would have to ride in car booster seats until 8 years old under a measure approved Tuesday by the state House of Representatives.

Kids could be exempted from riding in the boosters if they weigh at least 40 pounds or are 4 feet 9 inches tall.

Drivers who fail to strap kids into the seats would face a $50 fine for the first offense and $100 for a second offense.

The measure, House Bill 279, passed by a vote of 129-43. It now heads to the state Senate for review and possible vote.
