A major mixed-use development near the Mall of Georgia took a big step forward last week, but the final project could look significantly different than what developer has proposed.

The Gwinnett County Planning Commission unanimously approved plans for the 16-acre development on Woodward Crossing Boulevard across from the mall. The development now is set for a public hearing before the Board of Commissioners on Sept. 27.

Among other things, the plans include:

*A 21-story, 250-room hotel, which would become the tallest building in Gwinnett County.

*217,170 square feet of retail space. This could include a 50,000-square-foot family entertainment center and a neighborhood grocery.

*91,200 square feet of offices.

*352 apartments.

*40 condominiums.

But that may not be what actually gets built. The developer also is considering a plan that would feature substantially less office and retail space and more apartments. Attorney Shane Lanham told planning commissioners that the developer is still analyzing market conditions as it determines the final details of the development.
