City of Atlanta officials are taking the first steps toward potentially selling another major asset — the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center.

City Councilman Kwanza Hall is expected to introduce legislation today that could pave the way for the city to sell the aging performing arts center to a developer. The news comes about a month after Mayor Kasim Reed announced plans to sell Underground Atlanta, the multi-tiered shopping center in downtown that has become a financial burden on the city.

Under the legislation, the city would transfer ownership of the civic center to Invest Atlanta, the city’s economic development arm. Invest Atlanta would design a bid process and request proposals from developers to reimagine the site.

The 16-acre civic center site sits across Ralph McGill Boulevard from the headquarters of Georgia Power.
