Alpharetta police on Wednesday announced the recent seizure of nearly $1 million in marijuana from a “grow house” discovered in the north Fulton County city.
Police spokesman George Gordon said officers were initially dispatched to the unoccupied house on Waters Run Drive to check on an open garage door.
“Alpharetta officers responded and determined the residence was unsecured,” Gordon said. “They began a check of the premises to ensure there was no suspect on scene committing a crime or any other illegal activity taking place.”
While checking the house, officers “stumbled upon a large professional grow operation involving marijuana,” Gordon said.
An elaborate electrical and watering system had been installed, he said, with electrical power apparently being stolen by bypassing the residential meter.
Investigators confiscated more than 250 marijuana plants in various stages of growth. Gordon said the seizure was in excess of 188 pounds, with a street value of $850,000.
He said the home was a rental property and that the home’s owner had no knowledge of criminal activity.
Detectives have identified a person of interest, but have made no arrests.
