A Gwinnett County Transit bus rear-ended a Honda Accord Tuesday that had stopped for a school bus on Beaver Ruin Road, leaving about eight passengers complaining of injuries.

The Honda driver for some reason left the scene, said Capt. Bill Grogan of Norcross Police.

He said vehicles eastbound on Beaver Ruin had stopped for a school bus, which had stopped on the other side of the road to discharge students near Newberry Road about 3 p.m. and had its stop sign extended.

“The Gwinnett County transit bus failed to stop for the traffic,” Grogan told The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

State law requires vehicles on both sides of an undivided roadway to stop for boarding or exiting school children but Grogan noted that area of Beaver Ruin is divided and did not require the eastbound traffic to stop. “Often times motorists don’t know the law and stop.” he said.

He was uncertain whether the bus driver had been cited for a traffic violation such as following too closely since typically officers would want to talk to the driver of the missing Honda before issuing the ticket.

Norcross and Gwinnett police officers are now searching for the green Honda Accord that had extensive damage to the rear end and is estimated to about a decade old, Grogan said.

About eight Gwinnett Transit riders complained of injuries but none were visible to officers, Grogan said.

Attempts to reach officials at Gwinnett County Transit or Transdev, the private company with the contract to run the service, were not successful immediately.
