“Grey’s Anatomy,” one of ABC’s most successful shows, is saying farewell to a member of its original cast.

Justin Chambers, who plays Alex Karev on the medical drama, will not return for the 16th season of the Shonda Rhimes-produced series, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Chambers' last episode as Alex Karev aired in November, sources told the entertainment publication. In the episode, Alex came in to save Meredith, played by fellow original castmate Ellen Pompeo.

Chambers released a statement to the Hollywood Reporter on Friday about his departure, which he said would offer him a chance to explore more acting roles.

Justin Chambers, who stars as Dr. Alex Karev on TV's "Grey's Anatomy", answered questions during a VIP charity function at the Courtyard by Marriott in Springfield on Jan. 10, 2008.

“There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years. For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time,” Chambers said in a statement.

Chambers was one of four original castmates still on the show, including Pompeo, James Pickens Jr. (Richard) and Chandra Wilson (Bailey). He exits the show with it being ABC’s No. 1 scripted drama.

The response from the megahit drama’s fans was swift Friday afternoon. Most were concerned with whether the plot would call for killing off Chambers’ character.

In his statement, the 49-year-old actor expressed gratitude to the passionate fans of the show and the show’s crew.

“As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rhimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.”
