Just in time for Memorial Day, AAA has announced the national average for gas prices rose to $2.70 a gallon — a new high for 2015.
“Thanks to fluctuating oil prices, gasoline keeps inching up at a time of year when prices typically begin their fall,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group.
That means:
- Gasoline prices are 4 cents higher per gallon since last Sunday.
- The gas average for Georgia is $2.62.
- Both Tennessee, average price $2.46, and Alabama, average price $2.48, are bargains — especially if you are driving a gas guzzler.
- The price appears to get cheaper closer to the stateline: Rome is $2.55, Calhoun is $2.49, Ringgold is $2.29 — just south of the Chattanooga price of $2.25.
- Gas prices are expected to keep rising in conjunction with rising oil prices that hit $60 a barrel last week. The good new is that it is still $50 a barrel cheaper than the peak in spring 2014.
AAA is predicting the heaviest auto travel for the holiday weekend in 10 years — a 5.3 percent increase compared to last year. Read more about it here on AJC's Commuting blog.
