A 3-year-old boy died after witnesses said he shot himself at a Jackson County home, the GBI said Tuesday.

Jefferson police were called shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday to a Fairfield Drive home, where several adults were trying to help the child, according to Jesse Maddox, GBI special agent in charge. Witnesses told investigators the child had accidentally discharged the gun, Maddox said.

The child was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center, where he later died, Maddox said. The body was taken to the GBI crime lab for further examination.

The GBI is assisting Jackson County police, the Coroner’s Office and DFACS with an investigation. The case will then be submitted to the District Attorney for review.

Jefferson is located about 60 miles northeast of Atlanta.
