A gas leak in northwest Atlanta caused several townhomes and an event space to be evacuated Saturday afternoon.

Atlanta fire officials said construction crews were doing work when they hit one or two gas lines beneath the ground on Taylor Street.

Officials evacuated some nearby homes, and several people went to the hospital, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Taylor Street was blocked between Defoor and Chattahoochee avenues.

The news station reported that people on the street smelled gas, and that the leak forced an awards event at the Defoor Centre to be postponed.
