A grand jury has indicted a Duluth man in connection to the fatal stabbing of his mother earlier this year.

Sheila Kirk, 61, died in Gwinnett Medical Center on Oct. 8 from wounds she received when stabbed with an 8-inch-long knife on Sept. 25, authorities previously said.

Clayton Kirk now faces felony murder and aggravated assault charges over his mother’s death following Wednesday’s indictment by a Gwinnett County grand jury, according to Assistant District Attorney Robby A. King.

Kirk’s family previously told Channel 2 Action News that a psychiatric facility released him one day before the attack despite their objection because they feared he would become violent. Family members said he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

Police arrested Kirk at his home, where he had to be talked out of the house the same day of the stabbing. He admitted to stabbing his mother in the stomach and said he washed the knife and returned it to its proper drawer, an officer wrote in an incident report.
