2-year-old gunshot victim improving, LaGrange police say

A 2-year-old LaGrange girl accidentally shot Monday night "is responding properly" to treatment at an Atlanta hospital, a detective investigating the shooting said Tuesday night.

Calvinyanna Sanders remains on the critical-care list at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, LaGrange police Detective Jason Duncan said. But she has improved.

The shooting occurred just after 4 p.m. in the apartment of Shynobia Huguley at the Wood Glen Apartments, police said. Calvinyanna and her mother, Dashavey McCamey, were visiting the apartment at the time.

Three other children — ages 10, 3 and 1 — also were in the apartment, investigators determined. One apparently found the handgun, fired it and hit Calvinyanna, police said.

Huguley told investigators that she was in her bedroom when the shooting occurred. Her son, Korbin Willis, was in the living room with Calvinyanna, she told police. Dashavey McCamey and Kamiyah McCamey were also in the living room when the gun went off, police determined.

Huguley told investigators that the handgun was under the couch in her living room. Officers recovered the weapon inside the apartment.

Police are still asking questions about how a child got the gun, Duncan said. They have not filed any charges, he said — but they’re not through with their investigation.
