A 48-year fugitive who has said extradition to Georgia would be unhealthy has been hospitalized.

The attorney for Robert Stackowitz, 71, said this week his client is suffering from possible kidney failure. Stackowitz, who escaped from a Carroll County prison in 1968, has been in the hospital for more than a day, attorney Norman Pattis told a Connecticut television station.

Stackowitz was taken into custody in Sherman, Conn., on May 9 after his application for Social Security revealed his fugitive status. He is currently out on bond.

His attorney previously had said that Stackowitz suffered from several health issues, including heart failure and bladder cancer. Sending Stackowitz back to Georgia would amount to a death sentence, the attorney said.

An extradition hearing has been scheduled for June 6. After the hearing, Georgia has 30 days in which to present Connecticut with a governor's warrant requesting his move to Georgia. If Connecticut approves, Stackowitz will be returned to the state.
