A woman who stabbed her boyfriend to death early last year while he was on the phone with police was convicted Monday and sentenced to life in prison.

Sasha McCalop, 40, was convicted by a DeKalb County jury of murder, felony murder and aggravated assault for stabbing and killing 47-year-old Michael Martin after an argument at his Gresham Park home.

Police were called to the Welland Avenue home the morning of Jan. 17 when Martin dialed 911 to have McCalop removed. While speaking with police, McCalop stabbed him in the back and thigh, severing his femoral artery and killing him, authorities said.

McCalop was found hiding in a nearby shed after DeKalb police followed footprints left behind in a rare Atlanta snow. She was covered in her boyfriend’s blood.

McCalop tried to argue self-defense, but jail records show the woman was arrested for stabbing Martin twice before — both times in 2017, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office.

“A murderer I am not,” McCalop wrote last year in a letter to Superior Court Judge Linda Hunter. “I have been in an abusive relationship with the victim for the last three years. I know your (sic) saying to yourself why didn’t you get out. I was in love!”
