Three men have been charged in connection with a fight at an Atlanta club early Sunday morning in which an off-duty police officer working security was injured and hospitalized.
Rodrick Willis, 27, was charged with simple battery; Deshawn Benson, 24, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; and Mario Haygood, 27, was charged with fighting and possession of a controlled substance, Atlanta police spokesperson officer Kim Jones said.
The officer, who was not identified, remained in Grady Memorial Hospital on Monday. He sustained a head injury when he fell to the floor after being hit while trying to break up the fight, Jones said. The fight occurred at a club on Peters Street in the city’s Castleberry Hill neighborhood.
