MARTA police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a sexual assault near the Indian Creek station in Stone Mountain last month.

Marquis Lamonte Butts, 21, surrendered to DeKalb County police Tuesday evening, MARTA spokeswoman Alisa Jackson said in an emailed statement.

His arrest came one day after MARTA police released a photo of Butts to news outlets across metro Atlanta.

“We want to thank the public for the numerous tips we received,” MARTA Police Chief Wanda Y. Dunham said. “We aggressively followed up on all leads, which we feel led to the suspect turning himself into police.”

According to a police report, a woman got off a train just before 10 p.m. June 14 and walked across the parking lot. She told police when she reached Elder Road, a man grabbed her, pulled her into the wooded area and raped her. The woman called her roommate to ask for help just before 10:30 p.m. and went to DeKalb Medical Center, according to the report.

Butts was taken into custody without incident and was turned over to MARTA police for questioning. He is being held at the DeKalb County Jail.
