The man who is wanted in a fatal hit-and-run collision in Athens may have left the country, according to a media report.

Manuel Perez, 48, was identified as the driver who struck and killed 22-year-old Charles Avery Sokol in September when Perez’s badly damaged car — which fit the description of the car seen leaving the crash scene — was found covered by a tarp at the back of Perez’s residence, police said.

Perez made a withdrawal from a local ATM soon after the crash, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

The U.S. Marshal Service and the Border Patrol are helping search for Perez, who is a native of Mexico, Lt. Don Eckert of Athens-Clarke County police said.

The victim was from Hartwell and took classes at the University of Georgia, the paper reported.
