A Wednesday morning announcement at South Cobb High School gave students the news. A student hit by car as he tried to cross Austell Road had died.

Isaiah Dean was 16.

On Tuesday, Principal A.B. Hosey used social media to ask the South Cobb community to pray. On Wednesday, he asked for help with a fundraising account created for Dean's funeral expenses.

"SCHS time to come together to help our own," Hosey posted on Twitter. "A Go Fund me account has been set up for Isaiah Dean. Let's get it full."

Shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dean and a friend left the school and attempted to walk across the four-lane, divided road when the 16-year-old was hit by a Plymouth Neon, Pierce said. Dean was not in a crosswalk when he was struck, and no information was released on why he was leaving school.

The injured boy was taken first to WellStar Cobb Hospital and then WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until early Wednesday, according to police.

No charges are expected against the Acworth man who was driving the Neon, Pierce said. Bruce M. Guercio, 60, remained at the scene after the boy was hit, police said. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Cobb police at 770-499-3987.

Funeral arrangements for Dean were pending Wednesday. But Dean’s grandfather, Clyde Bruce, told Channel 2 Action News the teen’s organs will be donated.

“Something good’s got to come out of this,” Bruce said. “He had some mighty tall dreams.”

Students were allowed to leave school if needed Wednesday after learning of Dean’s death, Channel 2 reported.
