A Roswell man was shocked when he woke up last week to find a burglar searching through his bedroom with a flashlight, police said.

The incident occurred at the Wood Creek apartments off Old Holcomb Bridge Road, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The resident told officers he was sound asleep in his bed when he woke up face-to-face with an intruder shining a light in his eyes.

“While he was still kind of in a daze from waking up, the suspect came into his bedroom, flashed the flashlight into his face and then noticed somebody was in the bed and took off running,” Roswell police spokesman Officer Sean Thompson told the news station.

Police told Channel 2 that burglars typically avoid confrontations at all costs, and that this suspect was fortunate his would-be victim wasn’t armed.

“These criminals — they don’t want a confrontation with anybody, so they wait until people are gone,” Thompson said. “That way they can get in, make a quick theft and leave.”

The apartment complex was the scene of another break-in days earlier when thieves entered a unit and stole hundreds in cash, police said.

Authorities are encouraging renters to secure their apartments by locking their windows and installing surveillance devices, if possible. Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to call Roswell police.
