A man police ended up shooting in the hand had fired a gun at another man, pointed the gun at officers and led them on a chase through a southwest Atlanta neighborhood, according to a report.
Atlanta police said Todd Wright, 37, failed to comply with officers’ commands several times after they discovered he was armed.
Wright, who was denied bond, has remained in the Fulton County jail since his arrest Sunday. He faces aggravated assault, obstruction and gun charges.
Police said it began when Wright threatened and fired shots at a man at the intersection of Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Wright pointed a gun at the man and said “Don’t look at me” and “better not look at me” before firing a shot in the victim’s direction, according to the report. The report does not indicate if the victim and Wright knew each other.
Police said Wright was later found walking toward Drummond Street with two women. Officers asked him about the shots fired earlier.
Wright, feigning confusion, began asking what happened and “nervously backing up,” police said. As Wright bent down, a gun fell and he grabbed it and aimed at the cops, ignoring their commands to put it down, according to the report.
He then ran as officers followed him. Not long into the chase, police discovered a blood trail that led them to “a student rooming house” near the Atlanta University Center, according to the report.
Authorities knocked on the door and told those inside to evacuate as they searched the home for Wright. Officials eventually found him inside a locked room with the same two women.
Wright again failed to comply with officers’ commands, saying he “was just getting some sleep” and asking, “what’s going on,” according to the report.
Authorities eventually arrested Wright, who suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and bled profusely, cops said. He was treated at Grady Memorial Hospital before being released into police custody.
The two women were questioned and detained. Their names were not released.
Wright’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 12.
