After allegedly carjacking an 81-year-old woman in Walton County, police say the same man attacked a construction worker, striking him with a lead pipe and stealing his truck.
John Christopher Calhoun was arrested Monday after a manhunt, Sheriff Joe Chapman told Channel 2 Action News.
"Well, we've been looking for this guy," Chapman said.
Police said Calhoun, 29, kidnapped the woman from her home in Walton County, stuffed her in the trunk of her car and drove off.
Investigators tracked the woman’s cellphone to find her.
When they spotted her vehicle, Calhoun sped away and a chase ensued, Channel 2 reported. That's when Calhoun crashed the woman’s car behind a movie theater in neighboring Barrow County and escaped, authorities said.
She did not remember the incident, authorities said, and though she had a broken neck and was in the trunk of her car about two days, she was OK when taken to a nearby hospital.
“She seemed to be in reasonably good health, had some abrasions on the back of her head I assume from being in the trunk of the car,” Chapman told the television station.
Walton County deputies arrested Calhoun after a second chase and crash Monday morning.
Calhoun allegedly beat a worker with a lead pipe and stole his truck. That man was taken to a hospital Monday morning.
Investigators believe Calhoun did not act alone and that he may be involved in a string of car break-ins in the area.
“We do believe that there’s a strong potential that these individuals are armed and dangerous,” GBI spokesman Michael Ayers told Channel 2.
Calhoun faces two counts each of carjacking, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, armed robbery, vehicle theft and elder abuse.
He also faces burglary and kidnapping charges, as well as financial transaction card fraud.
