Authorities charged a family member in connection with the deadly shooting of a high school football player in northwest Atlanta, police said.
Dontavious Montgomery was charged with felony murder in connection with the shooting death of his cousin, 15-year-old Marquez Montgomery, Atlanta police said Tuesday.
The victim was shot in the head Monday night at a home in the 3800 block of Adkins Road, Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.
Marquez Montgomery, a sophomore at Mays High School in southwest Atlanta, lived in the home with his father, grandparents and cousin, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Dontavious Montgomery was out on bond on charges of murder and aggravated assault at the time of this incident, police said. The suspect was charged in January 2015, police spokesman Lukasz Sajdak said. He was released on $100,000 bond in October 2015.
Police learned of Monday's shooting shortly before 7 p.m., according to a report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A preliminary investigation indicates Montgomery was “shot by the suspect with no provocation,” police said in the report.
Marquez Montgomery’s girlfriend, Ronbria Brown, was talking with him on FaceTime when the shooting occurred, Channel 2 reported.
“I was asking him how my outfit looked and then the phone went face down and he wasn’t saying nothing,” Brown told the station. “His eyes were closed. Then I heard his daddy screaming, and his grandma screaming.”
A crisis team went to Mays High on Tuesday to help students and staff deal with the tragedy.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the family," Atlanta Public Schools said in a statement.
