A pedestrian was struck and killed Wednesday evening while attempting to cross a busy Marietta road, police said.

Trent Rhodes, 53, tried to cross South Marietta Parkway near the Cobb County Transit station just before 11 p.m. when he was hit by a 2011 Infiniti FX, said Officer Jared Rakestraw, spokesman for Marietta police.

The driver of the Infiniti, identified as 56-year-old Suresh Sheregar, was unable to avoid Rhodes, who stepped into his lane outside a designated crosswalk, Rakestraw said.

There is a crosswalk near the Marietta bus station equipped with blinking lights that caution drivers to yield to pedestrians. It’s unclear how far away Rhodes was from that crosswalk when he was hit.

The man was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he died.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police at 770-794-5357.
