Officials ID man shot to death, dumped from car in SW Atlanta

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office Friday morning identified a man whose body was found dumped in the middle of a southwest Atlanta street, possibly after a carjacking.

Police responding to a 911 call just after midnight Thursday found Lastarza Thomas, 23, of Riverdale, dead near the intersection of Garibaldi and Gardner streets.

Witnesses told investigators there were five people inside a vehicle when someone inside the car opened fire, shooting the driver.

“The victim was thrown out of the vehicle,” Atlanta police Lt. Charles Hampton told Channel 2 Action News. “Another individual fled on foot out of the vehicle.”

The remaining three people drove off in the car, which was described only as a black, four-door sedan.

“Hopefully we”ll be able to find the other individual that fled on foot,” Hampton said. “Hopefully, they’ll come forward and let us know exactly what happened.”
