A parent was arrested at DeKalb County’s Avondale Elementary School early Monday after allegedly entering the school with a firearm.
DeKalb schools spokesman Quinn Hudson said the man, whose child is among the school’s 472 students, came onto the campus just after 7 a.m. with a handgun in his belt. The man, whose name has not been released, never removed the gun or made any threats, Hudson said.
The school principal called 911 and “the school was placed immediately on lockdown,” Hudson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
He said the man, identified in DeKalb jail records as Jeffery Jericoh Delaney, was quickly taken into custody by school district police, arrested, and charged with criminal trespass, possession of a firearm on campus and disrupting a school. He remained in jail Monday afternoon on $19,000 bond.
“District safety protocol was followed,” he said. “The health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority.”
