The DeKalb County police officer who fatally shot unarmed veteran Anthony Hill said Thursday he acted in self-defense.

Officer Robert Olsen, appearing before a civil grand jury which will recommend whether or not charges should be filed against him, pointed to several incidents where police were attacked by suspects under the influence, according to attorney Christopher Chestnut, who represents Hill’s family.

Hill, likely reacting to medication prescribed for his recently diagnosed bipolar disorder, stripped nude and wandered outside his Chamblee apartment in March. A neighbor called 911 and Olsen was the first to respond.

Approximately five minutes later, Hill, still naked and unarmed, was shot twice after ignoring the officer’s commands to stop.

Prosecutors told jurors Thursday there was no justification for the shooting.
