An inmate charged with fatally shooting a drug suspect from Atlanta has been moved to another jail after being beaten by other inmates, according to a media report.

Akeveius Powell, 21, was moved to the Harris County jail after separate beating incidents this week in the Muscogee County jail, the Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus reported. One attack involved 15 inmates, the paper reported.

Powell is charged in connection with the June 15 shooting death of Demonde Donya Dicks Jr. of Jonesboro, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution previously reported. Dicks Jr. was killed just days before he was scheduled to appear in a Columbus court on drug charges.

“We moved him to an area that we thought he would not have any issues, but the reach of the people he’s involved with is pretty wide,” Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr said of Powell. “… The associations, the gangs — whatever you want to call it — is our biggest problem. Many times, we don’t know who is associated with who.”

Dicks Jr.’s father, Demonte Donya Dicks Sr., also is in the Muscogee County jail on drug charges.
