Protect your child
October is Crime Prevention Month. The National Crime Prevention Council offers the following tips:
- Keep tabs on your children.
- Teach your children their home address and parents' phone numbers.
- Set limits on where your children can go in your neighborhood.
The Cobb County Police Department is investigating an attempted child abduction, and the person accused of trying to force the child into a car is 10 years old.
A 6-year-old boy was riding his bicycle Sunday in a cul-de-sac on Hawk Trace Court in Marietta, Cobb police Lt. Nathan McCreary said. The older boy allegedly asked the 6-year-old if he wanted to look at his car. When the boy said no, the 10-year-old boy grabbed the 6-year-old’s arm and dragged him toward a white, four-door sedan, McCreary said.
A man and woman were waiting in the car, police said. The 10-year-old got in the waiting car.
The younger boy’s mother, Melanie Jones, told Channel 2 Action News her son fought back and ran home with bruises on his arm.
Jones said she’s taught her son for years about “stranger danger” and it paid off.
“I want to tell every parent, ‘Practice; don’t go with anyone who hasn’t come into your home,’” Jones said.

McCreary said no other attempted abductions were reported in the same area of Marietta in the past year. He said one attempt was reported in Powder Springs and one was reported in the Austell/Smyrna area.
