DeKalb police have identified a man shot by a security guard who has been charged with murder in a Wednesday night shooting at a DeKalb County motel.

The guard, Deontray Cooper, 25, tried to get 32-year-old Thearon Lee Almond to leave the parking lot at the A2B Budget Hotel on Ember Drive at about 6:30 p.m., DeKalb police Capt. Stephen Fore told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thursday.

Security guards at the location are not armed. Cooper retrieved a personal handgun after the man refused to leave the parking lot and became verbally hostile toward him, Fore said.

During the course of the confrontation, Fore said Cooper shot Almond, who died at Grady Memorial Hospital.
