Investigators believe a medical emergency may have caused a 51-year-old man to drive off I-575 and hit a tree, killing the motorist Thursday afternoon in Cobb County.

Ray Ledington was traveling southbound in a white 2006 Ford F-150 when he left the road and drove onto the grass shoulder near the Shallowford Road overpass, Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb police said.

“After traveling down the shoulder for a distance, the truck finally came to a stop after striking a small tree,” Pierce said in an emailed statement.

The crash happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. The Cumming man was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital but did not survive, Pierce said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police at 770-499-3987.
