A man accused of abusing his ex-girlfriend days before he allegedly shot and killed her son was indicted on murder charges, DeKalb County officials said Thursday.

Carlester Gilbert, 39, is also facing armed robbery, assault and gun charges after he allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend’s oldest son, Rashad Williams, on June 11, DeKalb County District Attorney spokesman Marcus Garner said in a news release.

According to the release, Gilbert went to the woman’s home and got into an argument with Williams before shooting him in the back of the head. Gilbert also allegedly shot and injured Williams’ younger brother Detavious Kwakye.

Another of Williams’ brothers and a teenager were allegedly shot at by Gilbert as they ran inside the home, but they were able to escape.

Following the shooting, Gilbert robbed a Chevron gas station at gunpoint and was seen by police tossing the gun out of his window, according to the release.

Gilbert led police on a high-speed chase on Highway 78 near Stone Mountain and onto I-285 south before heading westbound on I-20, according to the release. Gilbert was arrested after his truck slammed into a police car, which crashed into another car along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in southwest Atlanta.

Days before this incident, Gilbert allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend with a wrench and a knife before stealing her SUV, purse and cash and then leaving for Florida, according to the release. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and armed robbery by Norcross police in the June 5 incident.

He is being held in the DeKalb County Jail without bond.
