Newton County sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man in the killing of a 19-year-old in a melee at a subdivision near Covington.

Antoine Smith, 19, was charged Friday in the death of Malik Muschett, who was shot at the Enclave at High Gate subdivision Monday. Smith was arrested after a vehicle chase when he refused to stop during a traffic stop, Sgt. Cortney Morrison said in an email.

Deputies went to an address on Lakeside Circle off of Fairview Road around 5 p.m. Monday, authorities said. They were told a group of men and women were in the yard of a residence and a fight had occurred among some of the men, authorities said. Gunshots were fired and Muschett was hit.

Smith, of Conyers, was charged with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and criminal street gang activity, Morrison said.

Police also arrested Rodney Turk, 22, of Covington, in connection with the killing. He was charged with tampering with evidence, criminal street gang activity, and false statements to law enforcement, Morrison said.

Also arrested were:

  • Ladarious Boswell, 22, of Covington, on a parole violation charge.
  • Antavis Clark, 19, of Lithonia, on charges of fleeing and attempting to elude, aggressive driving, reckless driving, striking fixed object, criminal trespass, criminal damage to property and driving without a valid license.
