A Texas man accused of causing a wreck on Cobb Parkway was struck and killed moments later on I-285, Cobb police said Monday.

Rafael Chavez-Coronado, 35, was driving a red 2006 Chevrolet Silverado on Cobb Parkway near I-285 when he caused another vehicle to wreck shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, Sgt. Dana Pierce said. Chavez-Coronado continued to drive his truck westbound on I-85 until he lost control of it under the Mt. Wilkerson Parkway overpass, Pierce said in an emailed statement.

After colliding with a barrier wall, Chavez-Coronado got out of his truck, climbed over the wall and entered the eastbound travel lanes of I-285, police said.

“Within moments of doing so, the driver of a white 2003 Mercedes Benz C320 struck Mr. Chavez-Coronado as he was fleeing the area in the left travel lane,” Pierce said.

Chavez-Coronado of Houston was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Mercedes was not injured. Investigators do not expect to file charges against him, Pierce said.

Anyone with information on the incidents is asked to call police at 770-499-3987.
