Both Lavonia police officers who were shot this week while making a traffic stop are recovering, police said.

Officer Jeffrey Martin has been released from the hospital, and Capt. Michael Schulman’s condition also is improving, Major Matt London said.

Also, there will be a candlelight vigil for the officers Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the Lavonia Elementary School gym, according to a Facebook post.

The venue for this event has been changed to the Lavonia Elementary School Gym.

The officers determined that the man they stopped Monday night near I-85 was driving a stolen car, police said.

When the officers attempted to take the driver into custody, he produced a handgun and shot both officers, police Chief Bruce Carlisle said.

Schulman, 50, of Lavonia, was struck under the armpit while wearing a bulletproof vest. Martin, 22, of Toccoa, was shot in the right hand, Carlisle said.

The man who eventually was arrested, Khari Anthony Dashaun Gordon, 22, of Greenville, S.C., was out on bond in connection with an alleged homicide in another state.
