1 killed in grocery store shooting

Police said one man died outside a convenience store while another is in critical condition at a local hospital.

A shooting outside a south Fulton County grocery store Friday morning left one man dead and another critically injured, police said.

About 12:30 a.m., police received a call about a man lying outside Anu Food Mart near College Park, Fulton police Cpl. Maureen Smith said. When they arrived, they found 21-year-old Gannon Rooks had been shot in the face and chest. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

The other person, only described as a 21-year-old man, left the scene in the 5100 block of Godby Place in a white vehicle after being shot in the neck. He was at Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition, Smith said.

The men shot each other, Smith said.

Smith said the injured man told police he was at the grocery store for a drug transaction, but officials are not sure if drugs were the motive for the shooting.

“We are not investigating [drugs] as the motive for the robbery,” Smith said. “We are investigating it as an attempted robbery based on witness accounts. It is unknown whether drugs are involved at all. “

Police believe at least one other person was involved in the shooting.

“There was a man who came on the scene, retrieved [Gannon’s] weapon and took off in a vehicle,” Smith said. “We are still trying to find out who that man was.”
