A total of 13 people died in wrecks on Georgia’s roads and interstates over the July 4 holiday weekend, authorities said Monday.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, troopers and local law enforcement agencies investigated 12 fatal crashes that resulted in 13 deaths over this year’s holiday travel period, which lasted from 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday evening.
This weekend’s deaths represent a significant drop compared to last year’s Fourth of July weekend, which saw 26 people killed on Georgia’s roads.

State troopers investigated 180 crashes that resulted in 96 injuries over the 54-hour travel period this past weekend, the GSP said in a statement. Troopers also investigated eight crashes that left eight people dead, while local agencies investigated four crashes that resulted in five fatalities.
In metro Atlanta, fatal crashes were also investigated by Atlanta police, DeKalb County police, Cobb County police and the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, authorities said.
In addition to the traffic-related injuries and deaths, state troopers arrested 322 people for driving under the influence, data shows.

The number of arrests was down from last year’s Fourth of July weekend, which resulted in DUI charges for 422 drivers. In 2019, July 4 fell on a Thursday, however, and the holiday travel period lasted 102 hours.
Georgia Department of Public Safety officials also issued 7,609 citations and 8,679 warnings between Friday and Sunday night.
