Police are investigating a shooting in downtown Atlanta that left one man dead.

Atlanta police received a call about 2:30 a.m. Thursday from a person who heard arguing and gunshots near Edgewood Avenue and Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, Atlanta police Officer Kim Jones said.

The intersection is blocks away from Grady Memorial Hospital and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding.

A pedestrian flagged down an ambulance after finding a man, later identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner as 50-year-old Anthony Dixon of Atlanta, with a gunshot wound to the torso. Dixon was rushed into emergency surgery at Grady.

“The male died as a result of his injuries during surgery,” Jones said.

Jones said police believe Dixon was the intended target.

The investigation is ongoing.
