The man who was shot is not a student and was alert and breathing when paramedics took him to an area hospital, police said.

Georgia State University students were frightened when they heard nearby gunshots in northeast Atlanta on Wednesday evening.

A man was shot across the street from Patton Hall on Edgewood Avenue just before 7 p.m., Atlanta police spokeswoman Stephanie Brown said. She confirmed the man shot was not a student, and he was alert and breathing when he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

GSU police Chief Joseph Spillane said an altercation in the parking lot of a private apartment complex is what led to the man getting shot in the hip. He said his officers helped secure the scene, but since the shooting was not on campus property, Atlanta police remains the lead investigating agency.

Spillane said a timely notice was sent out to students because two suspects seen leaving the scene were spotted walking along Piedmont Avenue. He said police believe this was an isolated incident and students weren’t in danger, but he said the timely notice was put out as a precaution.

The suspects were last seen heading toward the Sweet Auburn area, Spillane said. Police haven’t made an arrest, Brown confirmed.

An investigation is ongoing.
