A Pickens County man facing murder charges in connection with a fatal fight at a Canton sports bar was denied bond during a court appearance Thursday.

The decision to keep Gary Matthew Allen behind bars came just days after a Cherokee County grand jury returned a seven-count indictment against the 31-year-old, District Attorney Shannon Wallace said.

Allen is accused of killing 45-year-old Leon Danzis during a fight at Canton Icehouse in late June.

Canton police said surveillance footage from the bar showed Danzis exchanging words with at least one other person before a group formed and punches were thrown.

Danzis, a construction worker from Hoschton, died of blunt force trauma after being struck repeatedly in the head and face, authorities said. The 45-year-old had been staying at a nearby hotel while he worked a job.

One witness involved in the deadly bar brawl told Channel 2 Action News that in addition to punches, a pool cue was used in the attack.

Allen was indicted on one count of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and battery, court records show.

Another suspect, Adam James Blackburn, was indicted on two counts of battery in connection with the fight. He’s accused of injuring two other people in the fray.

Allen remains held at the Cherokee County jail without bond.
