A Forsyth man was arrested Thursday in connection with an illegal traffic stop on a state highway, authorities said.

Joshua Character, 18, allegedly used red and clear LED lighting on his car to pull over a driver June 17 in Monroe County, sheriff’s spokesman Lawson C. Bittick III said Friday.

The traffic stop was made about 10 p.m. on Highway 83.

The driver, whose name was not released, said he thought the flashing lights belonged to an unmarked law enforcement car, Bittick said.

When Character got out of his car, he identified himself as a deputy sheriff and a firefighter, saying he stopped the driver for cutting him off on Lee Street.

Bittick said Character told the driver to head to the parking lot of a former bar on Old Brent Road.

After the driver asked for credentials and Character didn’t have a badge or identification, the driver left.

Character was in the Monroe County jail Friday, charged with impersonating an officer and false imprisonment. He had not yet had a bond hearing.
