More than two months after he was presumed drowned while attempting to rescue a niece and nephew at a Florida beach, a Valdosta man’s remains have been positively identified, police said.

Steven Shaw, 34, was visiting family and friends at the beach near Jacksonville when his niece and nephew became caught in strong currents, police said. After his attempt at a rescue, lifeguards were able to save the two swimmers, but Shaw, who was considered a good swimmer and in good physical condition, could not be found in the rough surf.

Witnesses saw Shaw go under the water and not surface.

Shaw disappeared May 30 and a body suspected of being his was found on the beach on June 2, Jacksonville.com reported. The condition of the body, however, did not allow authorities to make an immediate identification.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement used DNA to identify the remains.
