A Gwinnett County teenager is in serious condition after accidentally shooting himself in the head Monday, police said.

The shooting happened about 6 p.m. in the 1400 block of Wingfoot Way in Norcross, Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Deon Washington said.

Fredis Albayero-Rodriguez, 14, was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Police are investigating how the teenager and his 12-year-old friend found the gun, Washington said.

Four more children between the ages of 5 and 16 were in the house at the time. Police do not expect to charge either of the two adults who were also in the house, Washington said.

The teenager who shot himself lived in the same subdivision.

Washington said investigators don’t yet know where the boys found the 40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun that was reported stolen out of Marietta on June 24.

After the 14-year-old shot himself, the 12-year-old picked up the gun and tried to unload it, Washington said. The gun discharged again.

“No one was harmed by that shot,” Washington said. “This case is a serious illustration of how dangerous firearms can be in the hands of children.”
