A Dacula woman was jogging when she was struck and killed by a driver allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol, Gwinnett County police said late Saturday.
Karen Ann Ray, 56, was in the crosswalk on South Pucketts Mill Road when she was hit by an Audi traveling southbound on S.R. 124, near Dacula, Sgt. Brian Doan said.
Investigators believe Cristian Arizabaleta, 32, was driving a 2015 Audi Q7 and struck a curb, two concrete traffic islands and Ray around 7:30 a.m. Friday, Doan said. After hitting Ray, the Audi hit another curb, drove over the sidewalk and hit several trees before coming to a stop. Ray died at the scene.
Arizabaleta was charged with first degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, pending the results of toxicology testing, failure to maintain lane, and reckless driving. He was being held without bond Saturday night at the Gwinnett jail.
