Call it a double dog napping. Or an online transaction gone bad.

Two French bulldog puppies who were swiped by a prospective buyer were returned safely to their owner, Gwinnett County police said Friday. The man accused of stealing the dogs was arrested and charged with robbery.

An Alabama woman told police she had advertised the puppies online and had discussed selling the dogs to a would-be buyer over the phone, Cpl. Michele Pihera said.

The man wanting to buy the puppies told the woman he would pay more for her to bring the dogs to Gwinnett County, Pihera said. Thursday afternoon, the two met at a Duluth Highway grocery store, near Lawrenceville.

“After the two met, the suspect pushed the victim and grabbed one of the puppies from the victim’s hands,” Pihera said. “He then grabbed the other puppy from a carrier and fled on foot.”

The woman immediately called police and was able to give officers information about the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Ronald Junior Camenish. Officers went to Camenish’s Lawrenceville house, where he was questioned, arrested and charged with robbery, Pihera said.

Officers obtained and executed a search warrant for the home and located the puppies unharmed in the basement. The dogs were returned to their owner, police said.

Camenish was being held without bond Friday afternoon at the Gwinnett jail.
